- December Focus on Fellow: Wei ZHong, a former student of Dr. Yi Pan of the Department of Computer Science. ZHong is now an assistent professor in the Division of Mathematics and Computer Science at University of South Carolina Upstate.
- Science Park Groundbreaking
On October 10, 2006 , a ceremonial groundbreaking was held for the Parker H. Petit Instructional Laboratory and the Research Laboratory, the first two components of the GSU Science Park . Many MBD faculty will ultimately move both their offices and labs into this state-of-the-art facility that is scheduled to open in 2009. The Science Park is located on the corner of Piedmont and Decatur Streets. Check out some highlights from the groundbreaking ceremony
- November Focus on Fellows: Gurpreet Kaur a student in the lab of Dr. Binghe Wang in the Department of Chemistry.
- Events: Lee Gehrke to inaugurate MBD Distinguished Lecture Series
Dr. Lee Gehrke will present the inaugural seminar in the MBD Lecture Series. Dr. Gehrke is Hermann von Helmholtz Professor, Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, and Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gehrke's research focuses on RNA-protein interactions in the replication of RNA viruses, including the plant virus, alfalfa mosaic virus, and human viruses such as Dengue virus, yellow fever virus, and hepatitis C virus. Understanding of these interactions may yield insight for design of antiviral drugs.
Dr. Gehrke's seminar will be at 10:00 AM in the Sterne Room on the 14th floor of the Commerce Club. The seminar will be preceeded by a reception with coffee and refreshments at 9:30. After the seminar, Dr. Gehrke will have lunch with MBD Fellows.
- New Feature: Focus on Fellows
Beginning with October 2006, a new feature, "Focus on Fellows", will highlight the research of one of the Fellows in the MBD Area of Focus. The first fellow featured is Merry Clark, a student in the lab of Dr. Deb Baro in the Department of Biology.
New MBDAF Faculty Member: Dr. Richard Dix
Dr. Richard Dix joined the Department of Biology as a Professor for Fall Semester 2006. Dr. Dix received his Ph.D. from the Baylor College of Medicine and has held faculty positions at University of Miami School of Medicine, the School of Medicine, University of Arkansas Little Rock, and the Nova University School Medicine (Miami, FL) where he was Director of the Cancer Research Institute. Dr. Dix's research, supported by funding from NIH, is on ocular infection by human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a ubiquitous human Herpes virus, in immunosuppressed patients (HCMV retinitis is a leading cause of blindness in HIV/AIDS patients). Dr. Dix will teach both undergraduate and graduate classes in virology. Dr. Dix' position is supported by both the Molecular Basis of Disease and Brains & Behavior Areas of Focus.
