Science Education Initiatives
Zoo Atlanta
In collaboration with its community partner Zoo Atlanta, the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience sponsors an annual professional development workshop on animal behavior and the brain. The week-long summer programs, which meet the requirements of Georgia 's Quality Core Curriculum and earn teachers Professional Learning Units, consist of intensive hands-on instruction led by CBN educators. At the end of the workshops, teachers demonstrate their command of the material through “Teach Backs,” neuroscience lessons that they develop based on the workshops.

In Spring 2005, Zoo Atlanta will host CBN's annual neuroscience exposition. The event, held in conjunction with Brain Awareness Month in March, is designed to increase awareness of neuroscience as it relates to everyday life. The expo provides opportunities for children and adults to learn about the brain through interactive booths developed by scientists, health professionals, faculty and students from CBN institutions. Among other activities, attendees can hold a real human brain, control a video game with their own brain waves, wear a glove that mimics Parkinson's tremors and build model neurons from beads.
